Hey there Taaalk, I'm the nihilist911 from Reddit

I love international politics and keeping my ear to the ground. That is how I discovered u/nihilist911 on Reddit, probably the person in the world with their ear closest to the ground.

Hey there....if anyone has a question about my sources I'm willing to answer them.  Also any geopolitical questions are welcome.

Hi nihilist911 👋
I'm a long term follower of your subreddits which I credit for helping a good chunk of the Reddit community (certainly me!) see that COVID19 was on the way.
I think it would be really interesting to Taaalk about open-source intelligence.
So to confirm, that is when you use public sources to begin to reveal an easily hidden picture of what is happening in hotspots around the world?

Hi there.  That is 100% correct.  OSINT is using available public sources only to gather information and make analysis based on it.  It uses social media as well as the MSM.  It is legal to do this.  What would cause it to be illegal is any type of nefarious activity such as hacking.

Right. Thanks for clearing that up.
So before we go into the details of how you do it, from knowing you on Twitter and Reddit, it seems to be something that comes naturally to you.
Is that so? And if so, how did it emerge in you as you were growing up?

I don't believe it came naturally to me.  It's something that I've learned over time.  Having said that I was always very good at geography for some reason.  In fact it was my best subject in school.  I was a very lazy student but not in that subject.
Also to add to this, I was a avid reader of newspapers growing up here in Canada.  I would buy and read every newspaper I could find, even international ones which were more difficult to get in the days before the internet.

And what was it about getting news in your head that satisfied you? Or addicted you haha? :)
