Working on Our Chess Game

I am an ~Elo 1200 (now 1100!) player looking to improve my chess game. Right now I don't know any openings or endgame theory in detail. I'm hoping to change that.

So Mr PleasantEaring - what's the best way to respond do 1. d4?

Hi Josh Summers (Founder of Taaalk)
I am trialling the slav defence in response to d4. The moves feel natural and there is less theory to learn than in other popular responses.

What are they (the moves)? And why are they good? If you know. Mr PleasantEaring.

The Slav Defence is defined by the moves 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6
A benefit of this move order is that it does not block your queen's bishop from developing
It can be played at any level
Have you played against this opening?

I was white (go monkeyjelly4!).
The first thing we learnt is that the bishop going out to f4 is only 'good'. It gave you a slight edge as black. Nc3 is best. Why? Well to be honest I don't know and it didn't make a big difference.
The real fuck up in the game came after you made this move:

In my head, my pawn on c3 was now overloaded. I panicked and played:

But I was wrong to panic. Because if you did take on c3 (Nxc3), I could have played Qd2, pinning your night against your queen - ready for me to take on c3 with my rook.

So what lesson do I learn from this?... Look for pins? What do you think?

Here is another game where I missed a pin.
I just had to move my knight out of the way and then I had pressure on his knight on e5 and his knight on c3 - but I missed it and went for a set of trades instead.
Any ideas on how I can remember to look out for pins?
